The course acquaints students with the main social and political as well as social and realias, knowledge of which is obligatory for forming the area studies competence and it contributes to actual communication.

The course is directed to form area studies competence as well as to train students to habits of holding the discussion on scientific themes. This course acquaints students with political, economic, social and cultural life of modern Russia.

RS204 Russian leaders
The course is directed to form area studies competence as well as to improve students’skills of holding the discussion on scientific themes.
This course acquaints students with the most distinguished personalities and events of the history of Russia.

RS205 Women in Russian history
The course is directed to form area studies competence as well as to improve students’skills of holding the discussion on scientific themes. The role of women in the history of Russia is considered. This course acquaints students with the most distinguished historical personalities.

RS302 Äîáðî ïîæàëîâàòü â Ïðèìîðüå / Welcome to Primorie
History, geography and nature of the Primorsky Region

The course is directed to form linguistic and area studies competence as well as social and cultural competence. The course acquaints students with the history, nature and geography of Primorie.
The course includes polylogues combined with a certain plot. All the polylogues are accompanied with the area studies texts of various contents.

RS206 We learn to read Russian literature
The course acquaints students with Russian classic literature. The students are welcome to read adapted passages from the texts by the classics of Russian literature and by popular modern classics.
All the texts are characterized by the plot finality, interesting actions and the themes actuality. The second part of the course is made on the basis of Russian mass media publications of different periods.
This course can be studied all in all or partly. In the last case, student may choose themes (texts) most interesting for him/her.
Comprehensive lexical and grammar tasks contribute greatly to more profound understanding of a book idea and writer’s language, prepare for reading authentic texts.

RS207 Russian literature of the 19th century
The course acquaints students with Russian literature of the 19th century and is designed for studying written monologue speech and composition.
The students are welcome to read adapted and abridged works by famous Russian writers and their brief biographies. The texts are supplemented by lexical comments. Lexical and grammatical tasks contribute greatly to more detailed understanding of Russian literature, prepare for reading authentic texts.
This course can be studied all in all or partly. In this case the student is welcome to choose only interesting for him /her texts.

RS208 Russian literature and journalism of the early 20th century
The course acquaints students with Russian literature of the early 19th century and is designed for studying written monologue speech and composition.
The students are welcome to read abridged works by Russian writers and their brief biographies. Besides literature there are mass media publications which help students to get a view of this Russian historical period, writers’ attitude to historical events (World War, Revolution, Civil War) and literature. The texts are supplemented by lexical comments, lexical and grammatical tasks.
This course can be studied all in all or partly.

RS303 Russian fairy-tales
While reading Russian popular folk fairy-tales the students learn about life, traditions and character of Russian people.
The course acquaints students with the particularities of Russian spoken language. It contributes to form linguistic and area studies competence as well as social and cultural competence.

RS209 Âàø òîðãîâûé ïàðòí¸ð – Ðîññèÿ / Your business partner is Russia
Russian business communication, including cross-cultural issues
The course allows to form communicative competence in professional sphere. The lessons are based on the adapted and authentic texts from the Russian periodical press (economic direction). The material of the course includes the vocabularies of terms.

RS210 Nature and recreation potential of Primorie
The course acquaints students with geographical and geopolitical state of Primorie, its recreation resources and conditions, recreation and tourism possibilities. This course is directed to enrich and deepen students’ knowledge on area studies and to improve students’ skills of holding the discussion on scientific themes.

RS211 Course of social and cultural adaptation in Russia
The course acquaints students with Russian national customs, traditions, rules, social conventions and stereotypes. National specific rules of speech behavior functioning in the system of set phrases and expressions are considered in this course.
The course allows to form linguistic and area studies competence as well as social and cultural competence, i.e. ability to use information on area studies for real communication achievement.
This knowledge will help to communicate to Russian people in any situation.
The course includes references to Russian Internet sites.

RS212 Russian cuisine
The course is directed to form linguistic and area studies competence as well as social and cultural competence. The course acquaints students with the history of Russian cuisine, traditional dishes and drinks, customs and traditions of the Russian table.
The students are welcome to get familiar with the recipes of the Russian dishes, proverbs and sayings about food, abridged authentic texts by the Russian writers.
All the units consists of tree parts: 1) vocabulary and comments; 2) text; 3) tasks and texts.

RS213 We read Russian newspapers in Internet
The course prepares students for reading authentic texts from periodical press, develops students’ skills of selective reading and comprehension of actual information.
The units are divided into two parts: 1) pertextual tasks and the vocabulary of cliche; 2) authentic press texts in Internet.
This course acquaints students with the most popular Russian periodical editions and Russian search systems.

RS304 Russian as a resource of advertising
The course is directed to activate the received knowledge on practical Russian in aspect of its creative reconsideration. Object of the analysis are graphic and expressive opportunities of Russian in such dynamical type of a discourse, as the advertising text. The rate acquaints with audiolingual (phonetics – orthoepy - lexis) and visual resources of Russian. Morphological, lexical and stylistic characteristics of advertising heading as a digest of an advertising text are presented in this course.

RS305 Advertising text: genres
The course acquaints students with genre versions of advertising texts. The basic mass media genres and their subsequent transformations caused by a specific orientation of the advertising text are considered. Classification of advertising genres is given in a view advertising distribution channels: genres of printed advertising, genres of advertising on radio and TV, genres of the outdoor advertising and advertising on Internet. There are some texts with the analysis of typological genre attributes. Practical and creative tasks are presented in the course.

RS214 Verb aspects
The course is directed to enrich and deepen students’ knowledge about verb aspects in Russian. The main objective of the course is to improve students’ skills of using verbs in view of their aspect characteristics. This course includes some substitution and situational tasks, pictures, crosswords, fairy-tales, jokes and authentic literature (passages from the texts by Russian writers). The course can be used as preparation for Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (Second Qualification) in Russian State Testing System.

RS215 Complex sentence: basic meanings of subordinate clauses
The course systematizes knowledge about complex sentences in Russian, allows to reflect subordinate relations in speech and in writing grammatically, qualifies for listening comprehension authentic texts.

RS306 Expressing various types of syntax relations in the Russian simple sentence
The course acquaints students with the ways of expressing the different types of relations in Russian simple sentences with the view of their functioning in daily, official and educational spheres of communication.

RS307 Èíòåðåñíî? Îáñóäèì! / Interesting? Let’s talk about it!
Developing conversational skills


The course is directed to activate the skills of productive speech in various spheres of communication in the view of foregrounding language means which are character for popular-science and mass media styles; to form the habits of adequate transfer of information stated in different genre and stylistic forms to spoken language.
Each Unit is based on modern texts of different speech styles on the topic actual for students of advanced level.
Students are welcome to choose interesting themes for discussion (from the 3rd,the 6th and the 9th Units). It is necessary to study three or more Units to get a credit. One Unit is studied during 3 lessons (2 lessons – lexis and 1 lesson – videoconference and discussion).

Listening comprehension and spoken language skills activation

The course is directed to activate communicative competence and skills. Language and speech material of the course correspond with the Program of Russian as a Foreign Language of the First Qualification Level.

Students congratulate Ms. Irina B. Cherepovskaya, Assistant Professor of Russian School for International Students, on the successful presentation of the Candidate dissertation (Pedagogy) on "Theory and Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language" specialty.

The presentation took place on February 9, 2005 at Pushkin State Russian Language Institute (Moscow). The topic of the dissertation was "Online Schoolbook for Short-Term Courses on Russian as a Foreign Language (Advanced Level)".

FENU Law Institute - Seattle University School of Law joint videoconference awarding ceremony

On March 2, 2005 a videoconference was held between FENU Law Institute and Seattle University School of Law on awarding certificates of completion of International Humanitarian Law and Law of War, taught by Prof. Frederick M. Lorenz to four Russian students. Both parties expressed their interest to continue this course and develop additional courses next year.
